Xcode and Swift Package overviews, AAR analysis and Apple archives
Changes since TestFlight 0.1.6:
- Expanded free source highlighting for languages, web templates, build files, dotfiles and lockfiles, with improved filename recognition.
- New Xcode and Swift Package overviews: free summaries and standalone-file Source; Pro adds build declarations, dependency details and Scheme parameters. Scrollable groups adapt to narrow previews.
- Free Android AAR summaries, directory browsing and on-demand class-entry counts; Pro adds Manifest, Classes, Native and Resources analysis.
- Free Apple Archive listings, with content-based routing to distinguish them from Android AAR and ZIP.
- Apple application previews add build SDK/Xcode and per-architecture requirements; Pro adds component, dependency, technology and privacy-declaration summaries.
- Improved preview cancellation, malformed-file fallbacks, metadata alignment and translations. Markdown backgrounds now fill the viewport.
- Finder file thumbnails are deferred; Quick Look previews and their window icons remain available.
What to test
- Launch Peeka, enable its Quick Look extension if needed, then check Finder column and Space previews. Close and reopen previews after changing format switches or Pro access.
- Preview .xcodeproj, .xcworkspace, .xcscheme, .xcconfig, Package.swift and Package.resolved. Check narrow/wide layouts and Overview/Source where available. Compare Free/Pro fields; Scheme environment values should be hidden until revealed in Overview. Manifest inspection must not execute Swift or resolve dependencies; external references are not opened.
- Preview Android and Apple .aar files plus ZIP files renamed .aar. Check routing, List/Split, folders and free class counting. With Pro, load Android analysis and search classes/paths; return to Classes and check retained search state. Optional analysis failures should preserve a readable directory.
- Check .app, .appex and IPA identity and build details; with Pro, inspect available components, links and privacy declarations. xcarchive remains a Pro format. Missing optional data should not erase basic information.
- Try source files, templates and lockfiles, short Markdown in light/dark mode, and rapid file switching. Unsupported files and budget limits should show a reason or partial results without stale content.
- Regression: free APK/IPA, Diff and SQLite structure; Pro SQLite records, supported 7z and Mermaid on macOS 14.4+; purchase, restore and existing preferences.
Known limitations
- Limits: declarations are static, not effective build values, security audits or signature validation. No decompilation, archive extraction, general Inspector, comparison or export. Resource limits apply equally to Free and Pro; Finder routing depends on macOS.
Developer bundles, larger archives and Pele diagrams
Source changes since 0.1.5 in Peeka 0.1.6 (20261020.1):
- Added Pro previews for .framework and .dSYM bundles, with identity and available Mach-O architecture, UUID and platform details.
- Larger archives can read metadata on demand. Listings are no longer fixed to the first 256 entries; indexing, sorting, cancellation and preview recovery have improved.
- ZIP/JAR/WAR and TAR/TGZ filename detection considers common legacy encodings and preferred system languages while respecting explicit encoding declarations. Improved 7z listing for LZMA/LZMA2 encoded headers and supported single-coder solid archives.
- Offline Mermaid rendering now uses bundled Pele 1.6.0. Layout and supported syntax may differ from the previous engine. Improved metadata labels, localization and percentage controls.
What to test
- Enable the Quick Look extension and relevant format switches. With Pro, check flat/versioned Framework and dSYM identity, architectures and UUIDs. Use Space for Framework bundles that Finder expands as directories; also test dSYM column previews.
- Try ZIP/TAR/TGZ archives with over 256 entries and nested folders. Check List/Split, expansion, sorting and keyboard navigation. Switch or close files during indexing and reopen them; old results and selections should not return.
- Test Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Western legacy filenames, UTF-8 and ZIP Unicode Path names. Restart the app and extension after system-language changes. With Pro, check supported LZMA/LZMA2 and solid 7z listings and clear fallback for unsupported layouts.
- With Pro on macOS 14.4+, test standalone and Markdown Mermaid diagrams, complex Git graphs, long charts, Diagram/Source, Fit, 100%, pan/zoom and both appearances. Recheck free Diff, APK/IPA and SQLite structure, Pro SQLite records/BLOB prefixes, purchase/restore and format preferences. Include macOS, build, file type and Pro/switch state in feedback.
Known limitations
- Archives remain subject to resource and time limits and may show explicitly incomplete results. Filename detection can misidentify ambiguous short names. Encrypted 7z headers, filter chains and unsupported layouts remain unavailable; previews do not extract archives.
- Static ar frameworks show identity only. dSYM previews do not expand symbols or symbolicate crashes. Framework, dSYM and Mermaid provide no custom thumbnails. Mermaid diagram mode requires Pro and macOS 14.4+; unsupported syntax or resource limits fall back to source. Pro does not change Finder routing or remove limits.
Native Diff/Patch views and refined diagrams
Source changes since 0.1.4 in Peeka 0.1.5 (20261016.1):
- Added free native .diff/.patch previews with Source, Fluid, Blocks and Unified modes, file switching, old/new line numbers, change counts and text copying.
- Improved mail patches, quoted paths and paths containing spaces, large change blocks and cancellation. Refined Mermaid themes, connectors, Git graphs, Sankey diagrams, Kanban boards and long-diagram layouts.
- Improved ZIP and Android AAB boundary handling, Mermaid preview lifecycle and translations in all eight supported languages.
What to test
- In Finder column and Space previews, switch Diff modes and files, scroll large hunks and copy text. Test mail patch series, paths containing spaces, renames, binary patches and incomplete input. Reopening should restore Source mode.
- With Pro on macOS 14.4+, check standalone and Markdown Mermaid diagrams, light/dark appearance, narrow windows, Fit and pan/zoom. Recheck ZIP/AAB previews, purchase/restore and format switches.
Known limitations
- Peeka displays existing patch content; it does not compare arbitrary files or apply patches. Partial or unsupported input retains source and an explanation. Use Source for selection across rendered text fragments.
- Mermaid diagram mode requires Pro and macOS 14.4+; highlighted Mermaid source in Markdown remains free. Input and rendering limits still apply.
Offline Mermaid diagrams in Quick Look
Changes since 0.1.3 in Peeka 0.1.4 (20261014.1):
- Preview .mmd/.mermaid files and Markdown Mermaid fences offline, with twenty diagram categories including multi-branch Git graphs. Diagram mode requires macOS 14.4 or later and Peeka Pro; highlighted Mermaid source in Markdown remains free.
- Switch between Diagram and Source, pan and zoom, and use 100% or Fit. Improved light/dark appearance and narrow-window layouts; long diagrams can automatically fit below the manual zoom minimum.
- Settings > About now includes offline third-party licenses for Mermaid and bundled dependencies, with selectable, copyable text.
- Improved 7z fallback and ZIP/APFS boundary checks, strengthened provisioning-profile license checks, and fixed a Release startup warning.
What to test
- Enable the Quick Look extension and the standalone Mermaid format switch. With Pro on macOS 14.4+, test Finder column and Space previews, Diagram/Source, source selection/copy, pan, pinch, 100% and Fit. Reopen previews after changing format switches.
- Test Markdown Mermaid fences in both Markdown themes, long and multi-branch diagrams, invalid syntax and oversized graphs. Check source fallback with a reason, rapid file switching, resizing and the default mode when reopening. On macOS 14.0–14.3, Markdown source should remain available while standalone Mermaid and diagram controls are hidden.
- Check third-party licenses, purchase/restore, ZIP/7z, DMG/PKG, provisioning profiles, APK/IPA, logs and SQLite. Include macOS, Peeka version/build, file type, Pro/format-switch state and reproduction steps in feedback.
Known limitations
- Standalone .mmd activation in Finder, the macOS 14.4 minimum and physical trackpad gestures still need beta validation. Development checks confirmed Markdown embedded diagrams; they do not establish acceptance for every Finder entry point.
- Mermaid does not provide thumbnails or load external resources, and rejects configuration overrides. Invalid syntax or input, graph, time or output limits fall back to source. Some 7z variants cannot list entries; existing system-routing and thumbnail limitations remain. Pro does not change routing or remove resource limits.
Application icons in DMG and PKG previews
This Beta update adds application names and icons inside Quick Look for supported DMG and flat PKG files, and improves preview reliability. Changes since 0.1.1:
- Free DMG and flat PKG previews show basic metadata first, then discoverable application names and icons. Supported paths include HFS+/HFSX, unencrypted APFS, and uncompressed, gzip or supported PBZX installer payloads.
- When the outer disk image contains no application, Peeka can inspect one directly nested DMG level. Multi-component PKG results keep their component paths.
- Sharper Retina application icons, a cleaner preview header, background icon decoding and a stacked layout in narrow windows.
- Reliability fixes for archive boundaries and resource limits, Android resources, Apple package metadata, text encodings, SQLite and cache invalidation.
- Main-app log viewer toolbar and menu entry points are hidden while the feature is deferred. TXT/TEXT automatic content detection has been archived; the text loader keeps a raw-text fallback.
What to test
- Enable Peeka's Quick Look extension and the format being tested. Check both Finder column previews and Space previews.
- Try DMG and flat PKG files with one or several apps, multiple components, a directly nested DMG, missing icons and no apps. Check initial metadata, the eventual app list and fallback icons. Inspection should not mount, install or run scripts.
- Check light and dark appearance, Retina screens, narrow windows, long titles and rapid file switching. Icons should always match the current file.
- Recheck APK/IPA, Markdown, logs, ZIP/TAR/gzip, SQLite, purchase, restore and format switches. SQLite summaries and structure remain free; record pages and BLOB previews require Pro.
- Report your macOS version, Peeka version/build, file type and reproduction steps through Peeka support.
Known limitations
- Encrypted containers, directory-style PKG, Assets.car-only icons and some filesystem or compression variants are unsupported. Incomplete inspection must not be treated as proof that a container has no apps.
- TXT and IPS were routed to the system text preview on the development machine. TXT automatic content detection is not a delivered feature.
- Peeka thumbnail discovery and Finder icon-mode acceptance remain unresolved on the development machine. DMG/PKG keep their system Finder icons; this update adds icons inside Quick Look only.
- Pro does not change macOS routing, remove resource limits or repair malformed files.
Log and crash report previews.
Historical changes recorded in tag 0.1.1.
- Add highlighted raw-text previews with line numbers for logs and crash reports; readable OUT/TRACE and log-style JSONL/NDJSON are supported. Unrecognized content falls back to raw text.
- Pro adds structured log details and compact summaries, up to 2,000 entries. Counts and timestamps cover the parsed preview only. CRASH and standard IPS reports show available process, exception and thread information without symbolication or root-cause analysis.
- Introduce a main-app log viewer with independent windows, toolbar/menu entry points and Open With support. These toolbar and menu entry points are deferred and hidden in 0.1.2.
- Improve Quick Look registration checks, ZIP CRC32 verification, multi-member gzip, TAR handling, provisioning profile limits and bounded SQLite/JSONL/CSV reads.
- Add preview cache expiration and active invalidation; fix empty StoreKit refreshes revoking verified Pro, cancel BLOB reads on close, and expand real-world fixtures and regressions.
Known limitations
- TXT and IPS were routed to the system text preview on the development machine; the historical main-app viewer provided an alternative. Finder thumbnail discovery remained unresolved.
Source, outline and mindmap views.
Historical changes recorded in tag 0.1.0.
- Add Source / Outline / Mindmap views for JSON, YAML, TOML and INI, including folding, expansion and text selection. Each preview opens in Source mode.
- Use native AppKit outline and mindmap controls, render visible nodes, and support trackpad panning and pinch zoom with improved card sizing and long-label layout.
- Give all 14 source languages independent format switches, migrate the previous shared preference, and split the format catalog into source, configuration and database categories.
- Compact source summaries into a horizontally scrollable line. Refresh About and Help with website, X and support contacts; expand review fixtures and structured-preview regressions.
Known limitations
- Structured projections are limited to 1,000 nodes, 32 levels and 256-character labels. YAML/TOML/INI support conservative subsets with Source fallback; these views do not validate syntax.
Source syntax highlighting and line numbers.
Historical changes recorded in tag 0.0.9.
- Add free source previews for Swift, C, C++, Objective-C, Java, Kotlin, JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Go, Rust, Shell, HTML and CSS, initially using a shared format switch.
- Highlight Markdown fenced code using explicit language hints and common aliases; unknown languages stay plain text and diff/patch keeps added/deleted-line coloring.
- Use a native read-only text view for multiline selection, copying and horizontal scrolling. Visible line numbers stay aligned and are excluded from copied text.
- Improve compact layouts, visible-range coloring and structured-language lexers; expand large-file, Unicode, theme and cancellation regressions.
Known limitations
- Highlighting is local lexical analysis, not code execution or syntax validation. Finder routing for TS/MTS may conflict with system video types.
SQLite structure and record browsing.
Historical changes recorded in tag 0.0.8.
- Make SQLite summaries and table structure free. Pro adds read-only pages of up to 100 rows and BLOB previews of the first 4 KiB.
- Add a two-column database layout with table sidebar, Structure/Data controls, keyboard navigation and asynchronous column counts.
- Recognize SQLite by its file header, add DB3/S3DB/SDB candidates, and remove broad public.data registration to avoid unrelated previews.
- Improve read-only connection cleanup, WAL/SHM change handling, cancellation, stale results, truncation notices and malformed-file errors.
- Strengthen gzip, CSV, 7z and Android/archive parsing; improve xcarchive selection and thumbnail completion handling, fixtures and Simplified Chinese copy.
Structured text coloring and menu bar access.
Historical changes recorded in tag 0.0.7.
- Add lightweight syntax coloring to JSON/JSONL, XML, YAML, TOML, SQL, Protobuf, GraphQL and INI; use compact summaries and selectable source areas.
- Add a persistent menu bar toggle with actions to open the app, settings or quit, and clarify use when the Dock icon is hidden.
- Grow DEFLATE output buffers on demand and index Android resources by full resource ID while preserving budgets and cancellation.
- Add privacy manifests to the app and both extensions, default the shared Run scheme to real Apple Sandbox, and organize Free/Pro review fixtures and release preparation.
Known limitations
- This historical tag predates the Mac App Store release date. It did not add standalone HTML/CSS/JavaScript or log previews, and syntax coloring does not validate syntax.
DMG/PKG metadata and encrypted ZIP listings.
Historical changes recorded in tag 0.0.6.
- Add free DMG metadata previews using the UDIF trailer, including file size and sector-derived image capacity, without mounting or listing the volume contents.
- Add flat PKG metadata previews for file size, visible component count and Distribution/Scripts presence, without reading payloads, running scripts or verifying signatures.
- List encrypted ZIP entries when the central directory is readable, including names, sizes and encrypted status; extraction and decryption remain unavailable.
- Automatically enable Pro formats when purchase or restore newly grants Pro; later restores or refreshes preserve formats the user disabled. Expand review fixtures and repair the 0.0.5 Release build.
Known limitations
- DMG/PKG support in this version was metadata-only and did not provide Finder thumbnails. Application discovery and icons were added in 0.1.2.
Format switches and interactive archives.
Historical changes recorded in tag 0.0.5.
- Add per-format preview switches synchronized to Quick Look through the App Group; Pro formats guide users to the purchase page.
- Refresh Pro purchase copy and format descriptions to explain free/paid capabilities, examples and the one-time purchase; add review and sandbox purchase guidance.
- Add interactive archive directory browsing, file details and preview-mode switching, with improved sidebar sizing, expansion animation and accessibility.
- Improve archive metadata, gzip-tar/WAR type declarations and gzip filename display; expand actual Quick Look controller rendering checks for switches, empty states and unavailable previews.
Known limitations
- The 0.0.5 tag retained app marketing version 0.0.4 and build 20260922.1 in its project configuration; the heading follows the release tag.
Searchable format catalog.
Historical changes recorded in tag 0.0.4.
- Rebuild the main page as a data-driven Application/Documents/Archives catalog with an Archives sidebar category and live search by name, extension or description.
- Move Quick Look setup guidance to Settings → General, restore the system title bar and place a native search field in the toolbar.
- Add compact Pro badges and extension-first format rows with truncation tooltips.
- Make common archive previews free while retaining Pro for 7z and Java manifest details. Harden parsers, cancellation, access checks, JSONL/XML handling, and remove legacy plugin/font preview paths.
Safer parsing and archive-first previews.
Historical changes recorded in tag 0.0.3.
- Show archive paths and sizes before summary metadata, and raise the visible entry cap to 256.
- Document Pro archive coverage on the Documents page.
- Redact dotenv values, reject integer overflow and bundle path escapes, and correct inaccurate format metadata.
Android inspection and richer Markdown.
Historical changes recorded in tag 0.0.2.
- Add bounded Android summaries for declared flags, component counts, deep links, inferred stacks and resources across APK/AAB/AAR/APKS/XAPK/APKM.
- Expand Markdown previews to 960 × 720 with GFM tables, task lists and size-limited sandbox-local images, rendered offline.
- Focus the Documents page on Android and Apple package Free/Pro coverage; migrate bundle, UTI, App Group and Pro product identifiers to studio.mellowbit.peeka.
- Refresh Pro branding, settings, privacy and website links; remove unshipped Compare/export claims and add App Store Connect purchase setup documentation.
- Recover Pro from verified transactions when current entitlements are empty, fix renamed APK icon resource paths and resource entry budgets, and clean up stale extension registrations and entitlement observers.
First Android package preview milestone.
Historical changes recorded in tag 0.0.1.
- Introduce Quick Look and Finder thumbnail preview support for Android packages: APK, AAB, AAR, APKS, XAPK and APKM.
Known limitations
- This tag records the initial implementation milestone; it is not evidence that thumbnail routing works on every Mac or in later releases.
